Used RV Safe Selling Tips

In order to help provide a safe marketplace for used recreational vehicles here at UUYZ.com the following are a few tips experienced buyers have passed along.

When Selling your recreactional vehicle fraudulent buyers may contact you through email or by phone. They may sound sincere and genuinely interested in purchasing your RV. However some things to look out for such as the potential buyer offering to give you a check or wire transfer in an amount greater than the sale price. Even if they claim it was an accident, “My secretary sent the wrong check.” they will then proceed to ask you to cah the check and refund the difference. If you do that the buyer will end up with your money, and perhaps your RV while you are stuck holding what is most likely a bad check.

The variation on that is when the buyer presents you with a check which is counterfeit. You deposit the check and the funds are posted to your account, usually within 48 hours automatically by the bank.

However several weeks later you are notified by your bank that the check you deposited was fraudulent and therefore the funds will not be deposited. The Buyer has your recreational vehicle and you’ll have to cover any withdrawls against the cash out of pocket.

  • Never accept a check for more than your asking price
  • Never accept Third Party checks no matter how legitimate they appear
  • Even if you do not suspect that the check is fraudulent do not turn over your RV and title until the check has been cleared by the issuing bank
  • If you do decide to accept a check, ask for one drawn against a local bank and visit or call that banks local branch to determine if it is legitimate
  • Never send a buyer a refund against an over payment
  • And Finally, Confirm the Buyers Name, Address, and Telephone Number by looking at their Drivers Licence or any other documentation
  • For those Buyers looking for the recreational vehicle of your dreams there are also steps you will want to take to prevent a fraudulent seller from walking away with your hard earned cash.

Most often these fraudulent sellers will suggest using wire transfers or an unknown escrow service. Often free delivery of the RV is an incentive to finalize the sale.

  • Be very careful with international transactions
  • Keep your eyes open if the recreational vehicle is selling below market value
  • Remember that wire transfer funds are not recoverable. Never use a wire Transfer unless you are willing to say goodbye to your money
  • Always check out any escrow service used in your transaction.
