RV Internet Access

Recreational Vehicle Internet Access doesn’t have to be a hassle.

Today there are many options for recreational vehicle owners to access the internet. These methods range from the old dial-up method to expensive satellite connections. There are pros and cons of each option that should be considered carefully before committing to a contract.

The basic method that has been used for years for people with recreational vehicles is dial up. Campgrounds usually have dial-up connections, although you will have to deal with slow speeds, waiting for your turn, limited time, and possibly walking all the way to a manager’s office. Occasionally campgrounds will have connections for dial-up at individual sites, which can increase the convienence for people in RVs that are going to stay for awhile. The benefit to the dial-up option is the price, if you are charged at all.

A second method of accessing the internet in your recreational vehicle is using your cell phone or PDA. The main downside to this method is the cost incurred. If you don’t have a cell phone plan with unlimited data usage you can expect to pay large bills. The benefit of using your cell phone to access the internet is the convienence and the ability to do so while on the road.

You can also access wi-fi hot spots whenever you stop. These are often available at fast food stores and coffee shops, along with other locations. You’ll usually have to pay a fee of about $15 per month to access hot spots.

Another solution for internet access in an RV is to have a personal satellite system installed, giving you internet access when you’re stopped. Although prices are high, the convience may be worth it. There are two mounting options: the automatic roof-mounted system and the manual mount. A roof-mounted system will cost about $5,000 to have installed while you can expect to pay about $1,500 for a manually mounted system, with a plan of about $60 a month.

By far the most recommended option for recreational vehicle owners is to purchase an air card which can be connected directly to your computer or wireless router. The price for an air card is low and the monthly fee will be around $60–affordable for internet on the go. Today you can even get air cards with 3G speed, giving you access to high speed internet while travelling.

No matter which option you choose, consider the benefit to you and whether it’s a commitment you’re comfortable making. Oftentimes a contract will need to be signed requiring up to two years of service. If you aren’t willing to make a long-term commitment it may be best to stick with dial-up service or accessing wi-fi hot spots when you stop.
